As a native Santa Cruzan, of course I have to point out that Huntington Beach is absolutely not "Surf City". It's not even mentioned in the song!
They just decided to register that trademark legally in an effort to boost tourism.
Santa Cruz, on the other hand, had been referred to as "Surf City" in Northern California newspapers for decades. This stems from the fact that Santa Cruz was where the first surfing in North America ever took place, when a Hawaiian prince had visited in the 19th century. Oh, and because Santa Cruz is home to the surfing museum... and has an annual international surfing competition... and... I could go on.
Santa Cruz was dubbed "Surf City USA" by surfers. Huntington Beach was dubbed "Surf City USA" by marketing agents and lawyers.
Hmph.
That's, like, totally bogus, dude.
But the finisher's medal is a totally awesome surf board.
Thanks for the shout out! Well it seems like every other year, they have been dealing with a rainy race. So they should or could change their name to Soak City Marathon! :)
Well said.
