K says these bugs are beetles. Whatever they are, they're horny as drunken sailors in Singapore. Certainly they mate in positions almost as interesting. We'll soon be hearing the pitter patter of six little feet to the 10th power.

It looks like you've got a California Laurel Borer, aka Banded Alder Borer, scientific name

It does mention here that for some reason, they're attracted to fresh paint.
Another site explained that they're no threat to live trees, but only go after dead ones.
